The Great Dane breed originated in Germany and is dated back to as early as 400 A.D. Germany, Italy and Spain were invaded by Asiatic people known as "The Alans". The "Alans" brought with them large "mastiff-like" dogs. They were admired for their skills to hunt and take down wild boar and bears. People then started selective breeding, people wanted to create the biggest and strongest dogs able to hunt large game and be protectors. These "Mastiff-Like" dogs were then crossbred with Irish Greyhounds and the result were large, thin, agile, magnificent dogs known as Great Danes.
The Great Dane combines nobility with robustness and power with elegance. They carry themselves upright with dignity and pride. They have a very gentle, loving personality and are clearly very intelligent, which inturn makes them easy to train.
The coloration of a Great Danes coat varies, though not all are accepted in the show ring. The accepted colors are Fawn(solid), Brindle(solid), Black(solid), Blue(solid), Mantle and Harlequin. The non-acceptable colors are merle, Merle (merle+harlequin), Merle(merle+mantle) and chocolate. Solid Great Danes, should not have even one spot of white on paws, chest, undercarriage, etc. All Great Danes should have very dark eyes, in exception for blues whom may have lighter brown eyes.
Great Dane Breeding
Experienced and responsible Great Dane breeders know that you should not breed a harlequin to a harlequin, due to the fact that puppies can be born with genetic defects such as being blind and/or deaf. This problem is known as "Lethal White Gene". Merle to merle breeding can also create the "Lethal White Gene" although it is less common. Most Great Dane breeders mate a male and female of the same color. There are exceptions to that, as in breeding a harlequin to a mantle, or a fawn to a brindle.
Color-Pure & Non Color-Pure
There are two types of color breeding, color-pure and non color-pure.
Color-pure is when a dog has the same based colors in his pedigree. For example, a mantle with all blacks, mantles and harlequins in his pedigree, or a fawn that has all fawn and brindle in his pedigree. Non color-pure breeding is, when a dog's pedigree includes a variety of color. Like a fawn that has harlequin, blue, black so on so fourth. There really isnt a need for all dogs to mate color-pure unless your planning on breeding then it can be used as helpful tool to see what your dog has in is pedigree and what he might throw. It doesnt change the quality of your dog or his temperment to be non-color pure.
