Australian Blue Heeler dogs: Australian Cattle Dog (ACD) also know as "Blue Heeler, Red Heeler, and Queensland Heeler".

Blue Heelers usually weigh between 35 to 50 pounds and usually stand from 17 to 20 inches at the withers. These dogs have a distinctive white mark on their heads called a "Bentley Spot" which is similar to a blaze on a horse..

They are both blue and red in color with a kind of speckling coat called roaning of black and white hair which gives them the blue look.

Blue Heelers are generally healthy dogs. They can however develop eye problem that can be easily diagnosed by your vet. Canine Hip Dysplasia is also a problem that could occur in blue heelers so screening of the parent dogs can give you an idea it the puppies may also have problems later in life.

Blue heelers usually have a life expectancy of between 11 and 17 years.

Personality
Blue Heelers are characters and are not content to just lay at your feet or on their favorite rug and watch life pass them by. Be prepared to have a new shadow, someone that will be bringing you their favorite toys, someone that needs to help with laundry, making beds, watch you shower, the blue heeler will be with you at every step.

The Blue Heeler is a very family oriented and will feel the need to protect by making sure that any stranger knows that they are there and that you are not part of the family yet!

Training
Blue heelers are highly intelligent dogs that need lots of physical and mental stimulation to keep them from becoming bored. Proper training is extremely important if you are considering owning a blue heeler. A bored blue heeler is a mischievious blue heeler. They will find anything to create attention, whether the behavior is good or bad, a blue heeler will want to be the center of your attention.

Blue heelers have a tremendous amount of stamina. Blue heelers can seemingly run for hours on end with out tiring. Although bred to herd cattle, a blue heeler can easily be taught to chase and return frisbee's, tennis ball's or anything else that allows a chase. The games they play with you are all about seeking your approval / attention.

When training be sure and use lots of positive reinforcement. A blue heeler will quickly learn that bad behavior will also garner your attention, so be careful with negative reinforcement.

Grooming
The blue heeler has a heavy coarse outer coat that helps this breed shed rain water like a duck. But once wet, the soft under will stay wet for hours.

Blue heelers, like most dogs, will blow their coat once a year. However, if blue heeler is an inside the house dog they tend to shed constantly through out the year. A good grooming with a stiff brush will help alleviate some of the shedding problems.
