The Brittany, also known as the Brittany Spaniel, is an active, playful, and energetic dog breed. It possesses a strong sense of smell and stands out as an excellent pointing dog among other Spaniel breeds. Compared to most Spaniels, the Brittany has longer legs and a shorter coat. Its coat is short with light feathering, and its tail is either naturally short or docked to a length less than 4 inches. Typically, Brittanys have a coat color of dark orange and white or liver and white. They measure 17.5 to 20.5 inches at the withers and weigh between 30 to 45 pounds.

This hunting or gun dog is believed to have originated in Brittany, France. The breed's presence can be traced back to the 17th century through French and Dutch paintings. Brittanys were highly regarded as hunting dogs, particularly skilled at pointing. They were first introduced to the United States in 1931. While they are referred to as Brittany Spaniels in most parts of the world, the term "Spaniel" was dropped in the U.S., likely in recognition of their hunting abilities. The breed is simply known as the Brittany. In 2005, the Brittany was ranked 30th out of 154 dog breeds registered with the AKC.

Temperament-wise, the Brittany is characterized as energetic, playful, curious, and active. This highly intelligent breed is known for its loyalty, obedience, and trainability. Early socialization enables Brittanys to get along well with children and other pets. They excel as hunters and require sufficient exercise, especially during their first two years, to prevent destructive behavior. Brittanys also make good guard dogs and are suitable for novice dog owners. They are known to be great family pets.

Exercise is essential for Brittanys, and they require plenty of daily exercise in the form of runs rather than walks, especially during their early years. While they can adapt to apartment living with long runs twice a day, they would prefer a fenced-in backyard. Grooming needs for British Spaniels are minimal, typically involving regular brushing of their medium-length coats.

In terms of health, Brittanys have an average lifespan of around 12 years. They are generally healthy, but some common health issues found in the breed include hip dysplasia, epilepsy, and various eye diseases such as glaucoma, progressive retinal atrophy, and lens luxation.
